Connellsville celebrating Earth Day at Great Allegheny Passage, Yough Park

Thursday is Earth Day and the Trail Town Outreach Corps and the Fay-Penn Economic Development Council are inviting Connellsville residents to join together to beautify the Great Allegheny Passage and Yough Park and learn about a countywide buy local campaign.

Trail Town Outreach Corps members will be joined by members of the Connellsville Garden Club and the Yough River Trail Council from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. doing light landscaping, building raised bed planters, transplanting native plants, planting day lilies, placing tire planters and picking up litter at the northern end of the trail in Connellsville. "We'll also paint the gate by the stained glass archway," Lara Nagle of the Trail Town Outreach Corps said. Junior high students will help in the afternoon. "The park and the northern end of the trail are going to be a happening area of town."

The corps invites anyone with free time to lend a hand "and to learn more about the community vision for that area," Nagle said.

"We're welcoming anyone to come during that time period," Adam Flett of the Trail Town Outreach Corps said. "It should be a good time for everybody and a chance to raise awareness and raise community pride."

Fay-Penn also will encourage community pride when it kicks off its Buy Local plan with an announcement at 10 a.m. at the Yough Park shelter.

Fay-Penn is working on this economic stimulus to encourage shoppers to support local businesses and to highlight the importance of local businesses to the county.

"As part of the buy local network, businesses have been recruited in the county, businesses owned by local people," Philip Johnson of the Trail Town Outreach Corps said. "The discount card will bring people in and keep the Fayette County dollar in Fayette County. There are 60 businesses on board now. We're hoping to get a majority of businesses on board. Each business chooses the discount. Also, each business has been asked to donate two gifts per month, so every time you use the card, you're entered into a drawing for a gift."

Contact Fay-Penn here or 724-437-7913 for more information on Buy Local.
