Genealogy program to start at Scottdale Public Library
The Scottdale Public Library will soon be making genealogy and researching family history a little more understandable.
Beginning Feb. 6, sessions will be held each Monday at 6 p.m. to help family researchers become familiar with the resources that are available as well as how to use those resources.
Library Director Patti Miller came up with the idea after Claire McMullen came to the library as a trainee through the Lifelong Learning program.
"Claire has some expertise in the area and we get questions here literally every day on how to do research, what resources are available and can we get them those resources," Miller said.
McMullen has been working in genealogy since 1975 and has traced her own family roots back to the 1600s.
"It's fun to me," she said. "It's like a game -- like a puzzle -- and you have to see how all the pieces fit together."
The Westmoreland Library Consortium offers Heritage Quest, a genealogy program, free of charge and Miller said the Scottdale Public Library patrons use the website more than any other small or mid-sized library in the area.
Miller said the sessions will help patrons learn how to use the website as well as how to look into church records and catalogs.
The library has a number of personal family history documents. Miller said the library would accept any other family history that anyone might want housed at the library.
The first session will focus on how patrons can begin searches. The second session will focus on personal sheets and the census.
Those who are interested in being part of the group should call 724-887-6140 to pre-register. Those who attend should have a notebook and a pencil on hand.
"I have helped others before, and I'm excited about this opportunity," McMullen said. "It's going to be fun."
Miller said the sessions are for any age group as well as beginners or anyone who has tried to trace family trees before and might need a little help.
