Fort Armstrong Horseman's Association rides for charity

| Saturday, July 3, 2010

MANOR — Saddle up the horse, play a hand of poker and help a worthy cause. That's just what the Fort Armstrong Horseman's Association (FAHA) is hoping people will do Sunday morning for their annual charity poker ride at Crooked Creek Horse Park.

"Anyone who has a horse can participate in the poker ride," said FAHA president Karen Winter.

Winter said that last year the event raised more than $3,000 for the Operation Return Home project. This year, money raised from the event will benefit Second Chance Equine Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of horses.

The poker ride kicks off rodeo week and the 2010 Fort Armstrong Championship Rodeo, which will take place at the Horse Park on July 9 and 10.

Jeff Altmeyer, of Altmeyer's Western Wear and Trailer Sales in Kittanning, has been involved with the rodeo for the past 14 years. He is a rodeo committee member and a participant in the team-roping event. He said 20 percent of the proceeds from the rodeo will be donated to the Armstrong Community Action Food Bank.

"Last year we were able to donate more than 10,000 pounds of food," said Altmeyer. "We like to be able to give to the local charities." He added that people can bring along non-perishable donations to the park during the rodeo.

According to Altmeyer, a lot of local organizations will be involved in the rodeo.

"The Red Cross takes care of ticket sales. The Boy Scouts will take care of trash pick-up. There will be lots of food vendors, live music and lots of events," he said. "It's a great family night out.
