American Eagle Outfitters plans Big Apple flagship store

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. is growing its presence in Manhattan in a big way. The South Side-based retailer said today it has leased more than 25,000 square feet in Times Square, for a flagship store that will be the chain's biggest.

CEO Jim O'Donnell said the South Side-based company "looks forward to creating a world-class shopping destination for the people of New York, as well as customers from around the world" at the store.

The location at 1551 Broadway, at 46th Street, will have three levels of retail space for American Eagle clothing and other company brands including the aerie line of underwear and dorm wear. There also will be more than 15,000 square feet of multimedia external signage, rising 25 stories high.

American Eagle currently has 855 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and 75 in Canada.
