Duquesne University announced the formation of a needs-based scholarship.

The Robena J. and Walter W. Comer Endowed Scholarship will be available to undergraduates for the 2011-12 academic year, with a preference given to Washington County residents.

Walter Comer is a Washington County native and 1949 graduate of Duquesne. A veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, he was an attorney for the AFL-CIO and spent 29 years in Washington, D.C., with the Department of Labor.

He established the scholarship in honor of his late wife, Robena J. Peterson Comer, with a $50,000 gift.
