York Republican Mansfield to run independent campaign for governor

| Wednesday, March 3, 2010

York Republican Robert Allen Mansfield plans to announce Monday that he is withdrawing from the May 18 gubernatorial primary and will run in November as an independent.

Mansfield's decision comes more than two weeks after the state Republican committee voted overwhelmingly to endorse Attorney General Tom Corbett over him and state Rep. Sam Rohrer, of Berks County. Mansfield will announce his decision in the state Capitol rotunda.

"It has become apparent that I don't fit within the Republican Party," Mansfield said.

Because he no longer would run under a major party banner, Mansfield must collect about 19,000 signatures to get on the November ballot, rather than the 2,000 he needed for the May primary.
