CCAC students may distribute fliers without prior approval

Students at the Community College of Allegheny County now have permission to post and distribute materials such as fliers without prior written approval by school officials.

CCAC President Alex Johnson's cabinet made the decision on Sept. 21, said school spokesman David Hoovler.

The policy change came about five months after CCAC administrators prevented a student from establishing a gun-rights group at the Allegheny Campus.

Christine "Christa" Brashier, 24, had said that Dean Yvonne Burns told her on April 24 that she was breaking the law by passing out fliers about establishing a CCAC chapter of the Texas-based nonprofit organization, Students for Concealed Carry on Campus.

Brashier said she left the meeting fearing she would be expelled.

Hoovler said on Friday that the president's cabinet changed the policy because the wording was too ambiguous.
