The real skinny: As the Obama administration continues to insist only "the rich" will face tax increases, Americans for Tax Reform says a majority of the small-business sector will see higher taxes. Fifty-five percent of S corporations and partnerships will see a tax hike, it says. More "progress" from the "progressives."

What a waste: Pennsylvania State Police seized 2,376 marijuana plants growing in a wooded area of Somerset County, reports The Associated Press. What a waste of precious resources, especially in these challenging economic times. One can only imagine how much this folly cost taxpayers.

Palin's appeal: Boston Herald columnist Joe Fitzgerald on the popularity of the former Alaskan governor and GOP veep candidate: "What bothers her is what's bothering us ... ." In so many ways, she's become America's conscience.

Rational assessment: The Claremont Review's William Voegeli says America would be wise to see a "government that is both limited and vigorous, scrupulous about upholding the principles of republicanism but energetic and prudent about working with the framework created by those principles to respond to economic and social changes with policies that advance the people's prosperity and security." Now there are some tasty morsels for thought.
