Russell: Pearce's knee wasn't responding to treatment

| Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010

» Manager John Russell said that the decision for Steve Pearce to have knee surgery was agreed on between Pearce and the training and medical staff after the patella tendinitis wasn't responding to nonsurgical treatment. "He tried, but there was still some discomfort and he thought it might be best to go that route," Russell said. "All indications are that he should be ready for spring training and we'll go from there. But it's probably a relief on his mind to go ahead and get it taken care of, and when he comes back hopefully he'll be at full strength again." Pearce is scheduled to have surgery today at Allegheny General Hospital, performed by Dr. Patrick DeMeo.

» Daniel McCutchen said that while he still wants to be a starter, he's fine with the Pirates' decision to send him to the bullpen, possibly for the rest of the year. "Look at (Jeff) Karstens: He went from being a starter to long relief to bullpen in spring training to a starter in Triple-A to here," McCutchen said. "Lots of guys, if you look at their careers, it's not the easiest task in the world to come up as a starter and stay as a starter the whole time. It'd be nice if it was that easy, but you know, I'll just roll with it. I'm definitely not opposed to the 'pen, but I'd still like to start. We'll see if that opportunity comes up. Right now I'm just focusing on trying to get things together in the 'pen and help the Pirates win some ballgames."

» McCutchen threw from the bullpen for several years in college at Oklahoma, so he's not completely unfamiliar with the role. He's also been seeking advice from teammates such as Joel Hanrahan to help ease the transition. "I think the main thing that changes is the workout routine and running routine that I was on," he said. "I'd really push it hard two days after my start. I'm not going to go run 45 minutes of stadiums anymore. I'll just have to switch up my routine."

» Ryan Doumit was 0 for 4 with one strikeout as a designated hitter, as he began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday night. He was in the lineup as a right fielder on Tuesday .... Outfielder Andrew Lambo, who was acquired by the Pirates in the Octavio Dotel deal with the Dodgers, was scheduled to join Altoona last night.
