Veteran kicker Reed gets deal with Seahawks

| Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with free-agent kicker Jeff Reed.

Reed finished last season with the San Francisco 49ers after playing the majority of his first 10 seasons with the Steelers. Reed was released by the Steelers after nine games in which he converted 15 field goals in 22 attempts.

Running a reverse

The Giants have changed their minds about trading disgruntled defensive end Osi Umenyiora.

In an email to Umenyiora's agent Tony Agnone, the Giants ordered him to stop speaking to other teams about a trade, the desired compensation for which would have been a first-round draft pick. Umenyiora, dissatisfied with a contract that will pay him $7.1 million over the remaining two seasons of a six-year, $41 million extension he signed in 2005, reportedly is looking for a six-year deal in excess of $10 million per year.

The Broncos, Ravens, Seahawks, Rams, and Chargers showed some interest in the pass rusher who finished last season with 11.5 sacks. But none was willing to give up a first-rounder.

Out of shape, shipped out

Leslie Frazier insisted he wasn't trying to send a message when left tackle Bryant McKinnie, a fixture on the Minnesota Vikings offensive line for the past nine years, was abruptly released two days into Frazier's first training camp as a head coach.

Even if that wasn't his intent, that was how the move was being received by the rest of the team.

Frazier repeatedly declined to cite the specific reasons for McKinnie's departure, only saying that it had nothing to do with money and that the former Pro Bowler "wasn't the right fit" for the team any longer.

Browns sign Penn Hills grad

Penn Hills graduate Archie Donald, who played linebacker at Toledo, has signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent, the team said yesterday.

Donald (6-2, 244 pounds) played four seasons at Toledo (2006, '08-'10) and made 424 career tackles, sixth most in school history. In his final three seasons, Donald led the team in tackles. His younger brother, Aaron, is a sophomore defensive tackle for Pitt.
