Ward might be emergency QB for Steelers

The Steelers are contemplating whether to dress No. 3 quarterback Dennis Dixon for Sunday's game against Baltimore.

If the Steelers choose to sit Dixon, their emergency quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch will be receiver Hines Ward.

Ward said he has taken snaps and practiced handoffs following recent practices and said Thursday that he will be ready if needed at quarterback against Baltimore.

"I am just taking snaps just in case," said Ward, who last played quarterback in college. "We don't have an option right now. I can hand the ball off, but if it comes down to me, we are really in bad shape."

» Center Maurkice Pouncey is expected to play against the Ravens, but it appears receiver Jerricho Cotchery's sore hamstring will keep him out of the lineup. Cotchery, who's been battling a pulled hamstring for three weeks, was held out of practice Thursday — a day after having limited participation. As for Pouncey, the ankle injury that kept him out of last year's Super Bowl and the final preseason game last week isn't giving him problems. "I feel excellent right now," Pouncey said.

» Lineman Ramon Foster was fined $15,000 for a preseason hit on Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney. The NFL heard Foster's appeal Tuesday, and he's likely to get his fine reduced to $7,500. Foster said he reached out to Chaney on Twitter last month to apologize for the hit. Foster wasn't penalized for the hit.

» New Ravens safety Bernard Pollard is said to be a no-frills type of guy. He wasn't Thursday, though, when a Baltimore media member asked him about his style of play.

"When I hit you, I'm trying to hurt you," Pollard said on a video clip posted by the Ravens' website. "I am being honest with you."

Steelers linebacker James Harrison came under heavy scrutiny last October after a similar comment he made about his style of play.

"I don't want to see anyone injured," Harrison said, "but I'm not opposed to hurting anyone."

» Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said starting right guard Doug Legursky would move to center if there was an injury to Pouncey. Ramon Foster would then come in to play right guard.
