Be awash in music: Shower head has speaker

You know you love singing in the shower. But why stop when the water does?

Kohler's new Moxie shower head has an integrated Bluetooth speaker that syncs with a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or MP3 player to stream your favorite tunes. The speaker is removable, so you can move it around the house or recharge the battery.

The shower head is available with a spray of either 2 or 2½ grams per minute, in either a white or polished chrome finish.

It has a suggested retail price of $199 and is available from home centers and other retailers that sell Kohler products. You can find a store near you at www.us.kohler.com.

Build Pinewood Derby cars at Lowe's clinics

Lowe's stores nationwide, in cooperation with Dremel tools, are offering clinics on building Pinewood Derby race cars.

The free clinics, which will include car-design tips and tricks, will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16. Participants will get a 10 percent-off coupon for Dremel tools and accessories.

After a car is built, owners can enter it by March 1 at www.DremelDerby.com, for a chance to win a Dremel Pinewood Derby Rotary Tool Kit and be named the new Dremel and Lowe's Pinewood Derby Days champion.

Participants are encouraged to call their local Lowe's store to get more details.

Book delves into ‘The Layered Garden'

When David Culp bought a 1790s farmhouse in Southeastern Pennsylvania more than 20 years ago, he didn't see peeling paint and a run-down condition. He saw possibilities.

In the years since, Culp and his partner have turned that house and its two-acre property into Brandywine Cottage, a noted landscape where he grows unusual plants from around the world. Culp shares the beauty of that property and some of his garden-design secrets in “The Layered Garden: Design Lessons for Year-Round Beauty From Brandywine Cottage.”

Culp defines his approach to layering as “creating a series of peak garden moments,” and he fills the book with photos that illustrate that concept. He seeks not just a succession of bloom, but a succession of interesting happenings.

For him, layering involves considering the various levels of the garden, from ground to treetops, and the attributes of the plants — textures, shapes, colors, bloom times and even the feelings they evoke.

“The Layered Garden” is published by Timber Press and sells for $34.95 in hardcover.
