Pitt Ohio to move truck operations to Harmar
Pitt Ohio said on Friday that it will relocate its trucking operations to Harmar but will keep 350 employees at its headquarters in the Strip District where it has been for more than 30 years.
The trucking company will build a two-story, 19,460-square-foot administrative building; a 43,873-square-foot, 100-door terminal; and a 25,826-square-foot maintenance building on the 30-acre Harmar campus.
“The estimated cost of the Harmar development is about $17 million,” said Charles Hammel III, Pitt Ohio CEO. “The 350 employees who will remain in the Strip District headquarters are located there now.”
Hammel had outlined the company's plan in February, and Friday's announcement provided details.
The company plans to relocate and employ more than 125 people at the new site. Besides those from the Strip District, also moving to the property will be the operation and people from ECM Transport in New Kensington.
The Harmar terminal will house both Pitt Ohio's less-than-truckload and full truckload operations. Less-than-truckload service loads shipments from several customers into one trailer for efficiency.
Construction is to start in early or mid-September. And the terminal will have both gasoline and natural gas fueling stations. The plan is to develop a gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building, with the focus on water retention and reduction in addition to energy consumption as well as geothermal heating and cooling.
“As a company, we are very proud to build one of the most innovative facilities in the industry,” said Jim Fields, chief operating officer at Pitt Ohio.
“It makes sense for us to consolidate our less-than-truckload and truckload groups into one location, to leverage our operations. Customers want us to do more and be more flexible in the services we provide, and our facilities have to allow for that flexibility to service our customers for the future,” Fields said.
Massaro Construction is the general contractor. Lami Grubb Architects designed the terminal, and Dennis Troy of DTI Development will be the owner's representative for the entire project.
