Pennsylvania opened a trade office in Jakarta, Indonesia, becoming the first state to have a trade representative in the world's fourth-most populous country.

The state Department of Community and Economic Development said the trade office in Jakarta will provide support and resources to Pennsylvania businesses that will foster increased exports between the state and the southeast Asian nation.

The department's Office of International Business Development previously served businesses interested in trading with one of the world's fastest-growing economies from a location in Singapore.

That state agency operates 22 locations worldwide that serve more than 60 international markets, which it claims is the most comprehensive state-sponsored export assistance program in the United States.
