Toyota sales surge; Chevy still leader

Sales of new Toyotas in the Pittsburgh area grew 49.2 percent in the most recent two months, compared to a year ago, and ramped up significantly more than the 39.2 percent growth nationwide.

A total of 2,363 new Toyotas were registered in the region in September and October, compared to 1,584 a year ago, the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association said.

Other local changes: Honda, up 18.5 percent; Volkswagen, up 12.8 percent; Nissan, down 11.6 percent; and Ford, down 8.1 percent. Chevrolet's leading market share slipped to 13.6 percent year-to-date from 14.7 percent at this time in 2011.
