Pennsylvania’s jobless rate edged up to 8.2% in September

The state's jobless rate increased slightly in September as more people started job searches, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry said on Friday.
The seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 8.2 percent in September, up from 8.1 percent in August. The civilian labor force grew by 29,000 people from August to September to 6.5 million, the highest level on record, the state said. The unemployment rate is determined by a survey of individuals.
In a separate survey of employers, the state added a seasonally adjusted 17,800 jobs in September, the largest monthly gain since February.
Frank Gamrat, economist for the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy, Castle Shannon, said the higher labor force number indicates Pennsylvanians feel optimistic about the economy. But otherwise the report shows that the state's situation continues to be mediocre.
