• Pittsburgh now has a commercial kitchen open to all want-to-be cooks or caterers. Josephine and Gason Oria operate La Dorita Kitchen Share Space in the former Etna Health Club, 2312 Main St. Rear, Sharpsburg. It provides standard and convection ovens and equipment such as stainless steel work areas, freezers and refrigerators to help novice or experienced cooks experiment with a recipe. Members, who lease the space, have access to a bar and dining area. The kitchen is available in increments of five hours Monday through Friday and on off hours for event and cooking class. The facility is a result of a Kickstarter campaign which raised more than $50,000. Oria's company, La Dorita, produces homemade dulce de leche, an all-natural, preservative-free sweet spread, with dark chocolate and a delce de leche liqueur.
• The annual membership meeting for the Economic Growth Connection of Westmoreland will start at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Conference Center, Fred M. Rogers Center, St. Vincent College. Election of members to the board of directors is scheduled. Robert Rogalski, president, Excela Health, will be the speaker.
• The value of construction contracts in the seven-county Pittsburgh region in 2012 reached $1.89 billion, down 15 percent from 2011, according to McGraw Hill Construction. There was $1 billion in nonresidential work and $885.3 million in residential contracts. December's total was $175.9 million, more than double the $81.1 million for the same month in 2011.
• The Building Industry Trade Show, sponsored by the Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh, will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Sheraton Station Square, South Shore. New products and services will be exhibited, and industry education programs are scheduled. A fee will be charged; free admission to building industry professionals.
• Pittsburgh Planning Commission will hold a hearing at 2 p.m. Tuesday on a request by property owners for front-yard parking along the northerly (odd-numbered) side of Morewood Avenue, between Fitzgerald and Enfield streets, Oakland. The hearing is on the first floor of John Robin Civic Building, 200 Ross St., Downtown. If the commission approves the request, property owners may apply to the Zoning Board of Adjustment for approval.
• Amerco Real Estate Co. will seek approval on Thursday from the Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment for two 204-square-foot wall-mounted signs for U-Haul at 3000 Liberty Ave., Polish Hill.
• ParkWest Supply will seek an OK on Monday from the Findlay Township Zoning Hearing Board for a storage structure at 729 Aten Road, Coraopolis. KTA-Tator will seek a setback variance for an addition and a non-conforming existing addition to its building at 115 Technology Dr. The hearings start at 7 p.m., township building, 1271 Rt. 30, Clinton.
• Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services has partnered with the Educational Development School of Real Estate to offer free tuition for veterans who attend the school in Pittsburgh. The offer, which includes study guides, is open to all military veterans, whether returning from active duty or looking to make a career change. The offer is a savings of more than $500. • Wal-Mart has opened at 134 Daniel Kendall Dr., West Brownsville, Washington County; it employs 210.
