• Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, part of CHE Trinity Health sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, is planning in early 2014 to move its Mercy Intellectual Disabilities Services from 5850 Centre Ave., Shadyside, into about 12,000 square feet in the former Aisan Carpet store at 4749 Baum Blvd., Bloomfield. By tripling its space, the agency will be able to add programs, such as its adult training activity for those 18 or older and its senior program for those 60 or older, said Linda Ross, a spokeswoman. Another activity will be its School-to-Work activity in conjunction with the Children's Institute, for those 18 to 21, to prepare the students for employment opportunities in the community, she said. The additional space will permit the service to increase its workload from about 24 to between 60 and 75, she said. Between 9 and 15 full-time employees will relocate to the Baum Boulevard address.
• The Pittsburgh industrial market got a big lift when Gordon Food Service broke ground on a 420,000-square-foot center in the Findlay Industrial Park, Westport, Findlay Township, Pittsburgh's first major industrial development since 2009, said Rick O'Brien, senior vice president, Jones Lang LaSalle. “The lack of existing Class A space with large footprint (companies) will drive occupiers to design, build or build-to-suit projects to satisfy operating requirements,” he said. “There are several industrial parks within the region which can accommodate these projects.” According to Jerry Cagle, Ohio Valley Division general manager of Gordon Foods Services, the center should open in the spring of 2015 and create more than 160 jobs.
• Burgatory, a Pittsburgh restaurant featuring burgers and milkshakes, will compete in the World Food Championships in Las Vegas. Burgatory will compete in the World Burger Championship category, which will feature 50 of the world's best burger chefs and restaurants, from Thursday through Sunday, seeking the title.
• September proved to be a strong month for new construction activity in the Pittsburgh region with $209.5 million worth of new contracts, a 19 percent increase over $176 million for the same month last year, according to a new report. Contract for nonresidential work was $144 million, up from $63.8 million last year, while residential work took a hit with $65.5 million in September, down 42 percent from $112.3 million last year, said the Dodge Research and Analystics section of McGraw Hill Construction. For the year, $1.45 billion in new contracts have been issued, up 11 percent over $1.3 billion last year.
• George Haritos will seek approval on Thursday of the Pittsburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment to use 2,869 square feet of a structure at 4717 Butler St., Lawrenceville, for a restaurant. Lesley Crawford will seek approval to use the first floor of a two-story structure at 8862-64 Frankstown Ave., East Hills, for child care of up to 24 children, and continue use of the second floor for two dwelling units and an existing two-car detached garage at rear. Kim Hoon wants to used property at 4768 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield, for outdoor retail sales and services. The scheduled hearing by Shadyside Nursery LLC to use the lot at 510 Maryland Ave., Shadyside, for outdoor recreation and entertainment and for retail sales, has been postponed.
• Winner of the Building of the Year award from the Building Owners & Managers Association was 525 William Penn Place, Downtown, owned by BNYMellon and managed by Jones Lang LaSalle. BNYMellon and Jones Lang LaSalle have secured Energy Star labels and the building is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certified for Existing Building Operation and Maintenance. CBRE received the award for management firm, and WESCO Distribution was recognized for its internal sustainability commitment and program. The Presidentos Award was presented to Lydia Cessna of Cushman & Wakefield of Pa. for her leadership role in the redesign of the BOMA website. The event was held at the Hard Rock café at Station Square, where John R. Java, recently retired from BNY Mellon, was named executive director of BOMA.
• Arch Autenreith has opened a new Re/Max franchise office at 4485 Route 8, Suite 5, Hampton. The office, Re/Max 3000, will specialize in residential real estate and new construction.
• Wendell August recently opened its new headquarters in Grove City, The 52,000- square-foot facility, with room to expand an additional six acres, houses the company's new state-of-the-art Flagship store in the front. Off the flagstaff store is an entry to the workshop, where customers can take guided tours to learn about the handcrafted process of creating Wendell August giftware. The corporate office will occupy 8,000 square feet with more than 30 employees, part of the 90 employees to work in the headquarters. The company's former location in Pennsylvania was destroyed by fire.
