Fourth River Development of Pittsburgh will accept proposals for the sale of Schenley High School in Oakland through Jan. 18, 2013, consultants for Pittsburgh Public Schools announced Monday morning.

In a controversial 5-4 vote, the city school board put the high school up for sale on Sept. 26, after voting in April to delay it. The board wanted to see if the district could split off parts of the 4.14-acre property for recreational use by the community.

The board closed the 320,000-square-foot building four years ago because of concerns of asbestos, falling plaster and the cost of replacing the mechanical system.

Among the factors being considered in choosing a buyer will be how the developer plans to benefit the community, including support of the local economy and historic preservation.
