Some parents waited four hours to pick up students at Derry Area Middle School and High School when a “low-level” bomb threat forced an evacuation of more than 1,200 students.

Derry police said nothing was found when the Region 13 Canine Unit used bomb-sniffing dogs to sweep the complex on the campus on Route 982 in Derry Township.

Superintendent David Welling declined to release additional details about the threat.

Welling asked parents to talk with their children and to contact the district if they have any information that could aid authorities.

Welling said the district will review its emergency procedures, including traffic-control patterns. Parents were asked to produce photo identification, per district policy.

The schools began to evacuate to the football stadium at about 9:30 a.m. he said.

Parents were sent email, text and phone messages at about 11:30 a.m. The alert said students were being moved to nearby Grandview Elementary School.

Welling said students were given lunch at the school, and all high school and middle school students were fed by 1 p.m. The older students returned to their building about 45 minutes later.

About 400 of the 1,247 students were released early to parents, he said.

“Even though it was an inconvenience for parents, their kids were safe and that's our first concern,” Welling said. “We recognize this is a disruption to everybody and we appreciate their patience.”
