Chick-fil-A marketing director named Westmoreland chamber's Business Person of the Year

Angela Rose-O'Brien's career in business has taken her from newspapers to publishing to marketing a local franchise of a national restaurant chain and a job traveling the country to help open franchises.

What she has brought to those diverse jobs has been a passion for her work, said O'Brien, 56, of Unity.

“If you have that spirit and don't give up, and give it your all, you'll get what you want,” said O'Brien, the marketing director for the Chick-fil-A at Eastgate Plaza in Hempfield and a grand opening event planner for Chick-fil-A's corporate operation.

O'Brien was honored on Thursday as the Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce's Business Person of the Year at its annual business meeting and awards luncheon held the Greensburg Country Club.

In addition to two jobs and tending to her family, O'Brien finds time to operate Angela's Angels, a nonprofit in Unity that helps economically disadvantaged junior and senior high school students with prom attire.

“We're helping someone and not getting anything in return,” O'Brien said.

O'Brien's employer, Chick-fil-A at Eastgate Plaza, was named the Business of the Year.

Todd Murgi, who owns and operates the franchise, said in a video presentation that the award is a confirmation of the customer service efforts put forth by the employees.

Murgi said it was not only important to have great employees, but to be part of the community.

Susan McDonald, who operates the K.A.R.A.T. School of Learning in Greensburg, was named the winner of the Non-profit of the Year award. McDonald said the faith-based school is designed for students who do not fit into the traditional learning environment.

“We all agree that one-size-fits-all doesn't work,” McDonald said.

Rich Rosky, vice chairman of the Chamber board and manager of First National Bank of Pennsylvania's Stone House office in West Hempfield, said the group fully supports efforts to build the Laurel Valley Connector, which would connect the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Route 981 in Mt. Pleasant Township. The long-sought link would provide Arnold Palmer Regional Airport and the Latrobe area with easy access to the toll road.

The highway project has been given a priority by Westmoreland County economic development officials as well.

Chad Amond, who has been president of the Chamber for 10 months, said the association is a “crossroads” of business leaders, community leaders, political leaders “forming a voice that resonates across the region.”
