A former major in charge of security at the state prison in Hempfield contends administrators harassed him into retirement last year.

Frank E. Cole, 60, of North Huntingdon, filed an age discrimination lawsuit Friday in Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court against State Correctional Institute-Greensburg.

Cole contends he was forced to retire on June 26 by the prison superintendent and other administrators because of his age. Cole was 59 at the time.

“Mr. Cole had no plans to retire prior to the creation of the hostile work environment,” according to the lawsuit filed by attorneys Susan Williams and Adam Gorzelsky.

In court documents, Cole said he was hired at the prison in 1986.

Sue McNaughton, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections, did not respond to a request for comment.
