Pittsburgh firefighters rescued a man from the second floor of a burning duplex in Homewood on Thursday.

Firefighters responded to a report of heavy black smoke from the Frankstown Avenue home about 1:35 p.m., Battalion Chief Tim Kopicko said. When firefighters arrived, one group tried to go through the dead-bolted door on the first floor while another used a ladder to attack the fire on the second floor, he said.

Inside, they found a man lying on the living room floor, Kopicko said.

“There was no report of a victim,” he said. “It was a surprise.”

Firefighters pulled the man from the building and gave him oxygen, Kopicko said. He climbed down the ladder with help from firefighters and went by ambulance to UPMC Mercy, Kopicko said. No one else was home, he said.

“He came around pretty quickly,” Kopicko said. “He's lucky.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
