Mt. Pleasant Council poised to hold line on taxes for 9th year

For the ninth year in a row, Mt. Pleasant council has advertised a budget with no tax increase.

Borough Manager Jeff Landy said council has not raised taxes since 2003.

“That says a lot for the council,” President Joe Bauer said.

The $1,233,915 budget included expenses such as $224,150 in streets, $52,150 in general government and $49,000 in insurance and bonding.

Income included $30,520 in fines, $88,727 in intergovernmental revenue and $479,000 in real estate taxes, which is $5,000 less than last year's taxes.

Other than the drop in real estate tax, Landy said there were no significant changes to the 2013 budget.

Council voted to advertise the budget, which will be voted upon during the Dec. 3 meeting. Council kept the millage rate at 16.

In addition, council approved the 2013 budget for Mt. Pleasant EMS, with total income of $437,800 and total expenses of $434,100. Council also approved the 2013 budget for the Mt. Pleasant Glass and Ethnic Festival, with income of $73,325 and expenses of $68,900.

In other business:

• Council will advertise for bids for a lawn care contract with the borough. The deadline for bids is Dec. 3.

• Council passed a motion to purchase a 2013 Ford Taurus police car for about $30,000; members will study what can be done to sell the borough's 2006 police vehicle.

• Councilwoman Cynthia Stevenson announced that the borough received a state recycling grant totaling $1,400. She said she will use some of that money to send out fliers to garbage customers to educate them about recycling and include a recycling schedule and holiday pickup.

• A Book Fair will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Public Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Local authors will be on hand to sign and sell books.

• The Mt. Pleasant Community Christmas event will be held on Dec. 1, beginning at 10 a.m. with Santa sales at local businesses; the parade featuring Santa at 11 a.m.; hot chocolate and cookies at the gazebo from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; meeting Santa at the gazebo from noon to 1 p.m.; Christmas at the Cabin to roast marshmallows and hot dogs from noon to 1:30 p.m.; Festival of Lights at the DAR House from 1:30 to 9 p.m.; and the Candlelight Procession from the Central Fire Station to the gazebo at 6 p.m.

There will also be a Gingerbread House Tour where approximately 28 gingerbread houses will be on display at selected store windows. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the Wounded Warrior Fund.
