A car that drove into the Coal Center Post Office in Washington County about 11 a.m. Tuesday did “considerable damage to the building,” but injured no one, said Chief John Hartman of the Southwest Regional Police.
Julia Hartley, 87, told police her foot slipped from the break to the gas when she was in the post office parking lot, sending the car smashing into the building. Hartley will not be charged, Hartman said.
The car went through the side of the building into a waiting area, cracking another wall and moving a countertop, Hartman said.
The post office remains closed while engineers assess the damage, Hartman said. He did not know how long it will be closed.
