Residents near the Pittsburgh Street Park in Scottdale hope to help the borough's Parks and Recreation Commission figure out what can be done to make it safer and more inviting.

Residents Tom Bailey and Carey Budd last week questioned parks commission members about swings that were taken down recently.

Commissioner Colleen Kenney said the swings were removed because they were unsafe, and they cannot be put up because the equipment that holds the swings is unsafe.

“We're not doing anything because we don't know what to do,” Kenney said. “We can't rehang the swings because the equipment there to hang it on is not safe.”

Everything takes money to fix, commission President Jerry Firestone said, and members are working on placing new equipment in two other borough parks.

Before anyone came to it about the Pittsburgh Street Park, the commission had a project in the works for the Chestnut Street Park, its primary focus, he said.

Budd asked the commission to let the community know what it could do to help make the Pittsburgh Street Park a better place for children.

The process is for the commission to come up with a plan, then take it to the borough council, Kenney said, but “the whole process is very slow.”

The commission is in limbo with the Pittsburgh Street Park and has no plan for it, Firestone said.

He reported that new poles at Loucks Park have been installed, and one of them has a new light.

Angelo Pallone, borough manager, is asking a consultant with S&S Processing to look at the borough's ball fields to see what can be done. Firestone said all of the infields are very grassy.
