Astrobotic Technology Inc. has started construction on a Strip District headquarters that will feature a crane that simulates gravity for robots on the moon.

“This facility will play a crucial role in the development of our landers and rovers toward a moon mission in 2015,” President John Thornton said Monday. The company plans to move to a 3,600-square-foot facility at Liberty Avenue and 25th Street in January.

Astrobotic, now in Oakland, is a Carnegie Mellon University spinoff. The company has obtained NASA funding for various lunar projects, and is working on a $100 million lunar lander/rover called Polaris that it hopes to launch in October 2015 to prospect for ice on the moon's north pole.
