Two people were treated Sunday for minor smoke inhalation after escaping from a fire in an Irwin apartment building.

Irwin Assistant Fire Chief Samuel Bray said borough police and a state police fire marshal are investigating the cause of the 6:45 a.m. blaze. The fire was contained to one apartment in the three-story, six-unit building in the 600 block of Walnut Street, he said. Firefighters had flames under control in about 30 minutes.

The remaining apartments sustained water and smoke damage, Bray said. The unit where the fire originated was gutted.

Four other residents were evacuated. The Red Cross is assisting the victims, Bray said.
