James Knox | Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Sugar Pie gets a bath from Animal Friends volunteer Debbie Babor December 31, 2012 at the animal shelter's headquarters on Camp Horne Road as a part of the 16th annual New Years Eve Rescue. The rescue brings volunteers and staff together to grant an eleventh-hour reprive to 34 lost and stray pets who were slated to be euthanized at animal control facilities by the year's end. Each animal will be spayed or neutered, groomed and given a comprehensive medical and behavioral evaluation with hopes that it will find a new home in 2013.

'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.
