Hair it is

Allure magazine's Insider's Guide offers tips to find your perfect hair color from Louis Licari, colorist and owner of the Louis Licari Salon in New York City. He has worked with Jodie Foster, Susan Sarandon and Sofia Coppola.

Bring in a picture of yourself: If you haven't seen your natural color in a long time, dig up a childhood photo. Hair tends to darken as you age, so looking at your roots isn't a good representation of your “natural” color. Most women in their 30s and 40s need to lighten their base by about two shades to get back to the hair color that really makes their skin glow.

Don't try to use salon speak: Unless you are perfectly clear on what terms like “ashy,” “warm,” and “lowlights” mean, it's better to show your colorist a picture of the shade you are after than try to describe it.

Put us on the spot: Ask the right questions: “Is this color going to make me look better? Will it work with my hair type? What condition will my hair be in afterward? How do I care for it at home? Will it look OK when the roots grow in, and how often do I need to come back?”

Request a review: If you change your hair color a lot or want a drastic transformation, ask your colorist to do a strand test first. You'll be able to see what color your hair turns and how it feels.

Wardrobe style tricks

Alice + Olivia's Stacey Bendet is the designer behind the line. She offers some fun ideas and styling tricks to update your wardrobe in People Style Watch magazine.

Rock a full skirt: “A colorful version with embroidered lace is so cute — and perfect for day or night. Go casual with a T-shirt and pointy shoes, or dress it up with a spaghetti-strap tank and sexy heels.”

Wear special jewelry: “I'm all about vintage necklaces. Lockets are beautiful and add interest to any look. Chunky Bakelite bangles and clip-on earrings are also stylish accents and go great with platforms.”

Sport a sleek carryall: “Throw on a modern black-and-white bag for an easy update. It makes laid-back outfits, like a tank and skinny jeans, look incredibly chic.”

Play with prints: “Start with a statement piece, like bright floral jeans, and add a simple striped top — it works with every color and pattern and adds an unexpected pop.”

Try a bold lip: “When I need a quick fix, I put on M.A.C. lipstick in Russian Red. Its saturated hue is an instant mood-lifter.”

Insiders offer some thrift shop tips

Reality stars Christos Garkinos and Cameron Silver of Bravo's “Dukes of Melrose” and Doris Raymond of Smithsonian Channel's “L.A. Frock Stars” share insider thrifting tips in InStyle magazine.

Inquire in store: Did anything new come in today? “There's nothing better than an entrée to the back room where merchandise that no one else has seen yet is kept. Ask nicely,” says Garkinos.

Inspect in the dressing room: What's that metal zipper say? “Check the pull tab's stamp. If it reads ‘Éclair,' a fave of designers like Chanel, it may be a couture piece,” says Raymond.

Clean at home: Odors? Not an issue. “Hand-wash fabrics like cashmere with Mrs. Meyer's All-Purpose Cleaner in Lemon Verbena to eliminate virtually any smell. Roll in a towel to get rid of excess water and place flat in the sun. It'll smell like Provence,” Silver says.
