Macy's, Tanger events showcase season styles at Pittsburgh's Fashion Week
Sweater dresses, pencil skirts, skinny jeans and motorcycle jackets.
All are on trend for fall in deep purples, rich greens, brilliant blues and robust reds.
Get a look at these latest fashions as Macy's, Downtown, and Tanger Outlets, Washington County, host runway shows for the fourth annual Pittsburgh Fashion Week.
Macy's production “Classic Fall Fashions for the Pittsburgh Professional” begins at 5 p.m. Sept. 25. Tanger Outlets presents the second annual “Pink Partini & Fashion Bash” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26, which benefits the American Cancer Society.
Fashion Week executive director Miyoshi Anderson says the Macy's theme most likely will attract the city's young professionals as a wonderful networking event.
“This event is being held in the place in Pittsburgh that is the corporate center of the city, with so many businesses and companies here,” says Anderson, who has been working to partner with Macy's since fashion week's inception. “The show will give ideas about how to dress in classic styles for work that are still trendy.”
Joe Hladiuk, Macy's Downtown store manager, agrees.
“We wanted to focus on the customer who shops our Downtown store looking for what to wear to the office as well as what to wear beyond the office,” says Hladiuk. They also like to see how the 9 to 5 look can work for an evening of drinks and dinner, he says.
“Being Downtown, we see a lot of fashionable individuals and Macy's has the clothing and accessories and footwear to add to their wardrobes,” says Hladiuk, who points out the five essentials of professional dressing — the shirt, the crew neck sweater, the fit-and-flare dress, the skirt and the motorcycle jacket/blazer.
“Layering is a great way to have an outfit that's appropriate for work and also for after-hours,” he says.
In addition to the show, Macy's has teamed with The Art Institute of Pittsburgh by displaying student designs in the store windows and giving a sneak peek to the back-to-back runway shows on Sept. 28.
Anderson has made a point of promoting up-and-coming student designers and hopes to continue having shows at Macys.
Having Tanger Outlets on board for a second year was built through a wonderful working relationship, Anderson says.
“I love the enthusiasm of everyone at Tanger,” Anderson says. “I love their vision and their fashion outreach is amazing. They are a joy to work with and I look to have a partnership with them for years to come.”
The success of last year's show — which had more than 200 guests in its standing-room-only event — inspired Tanger Outlets' general manager Jodi Dague to return for another year.
“We hope this year is bigger and better,” says Dague. “I love that Pittsburgh has a Fashion Week and that we were invited to participate. It's an opportunity to not only show what Tanger Outlets has to offer in terms of a broad range of fashions, but to help promote fashion in general.”
One of the models for the Tanger show is Janet Sanjur of Canonsburg, who has never walked a runway before. But she has faced tougher challenges — she is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
“I think the fashion show will be fun,” Sanjur says. “I just hope I don't fall down on the runway. I will be wearing my own shoes, so that's good. Walking the runway will be a distraction from what I am going through. Some days are exhausting, but I have always been positive.”
The show includes 12 stores and close to 40 outfits from casual to glitz and glam. Stores include Ann Taylor Factory Store, Loft Outlet, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Banana Republic Factory Store, Under Armour, Tommy Hilfiger, New York & Company, Van Heusen, Talbots, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Dress Barn and Levi's Outlet.
“A garment can be spectacular on a hanger, but it's about fit, and if it doesn't fit then it won't look right,” says Nicole Widdowson, stylist for the Tanger show.
“You want them to wear the garment, not the garment to wear them,” she says. “I enjoy styling models and showing how to put an outfit together, from the clothing to the accessories and footwear.”
