Black and gold goes from sporty to elegant

Black and gold are a perfect color combination — and not just for Pittsburgh sports fans.

“The garment trend of black and gold, right now, is on fire,” says Suzanne Mauro, a stylist accredited by the Association of Image Consultants International and “Style Everyday With Suz” on community-access PCTV. “It seems that everyone loves how this mix transforms Renaissance, hippie, Asian and modernist influences into spectacular ways with its use of foil, sequins, brocade and embossed surfaces.”

When you wear this combo, let the gold dominate, Mauro says. Gold feels luxurious and brings light and life to any outfit. Try pairing a brocade pattern with black for a more modern way to wear it. Or, opt for a gold-sequined black skirt with a basic black tuxedo jacket.

“Black and gold have always been about this classic elegance,” says Gregg Andrews, Nordstrom fashion director. “It conjures up images of baroque, and baroque tends to be the epitome of elegance.”

As an accessory, gold is really hot right now, Andrews says. “Gold has made a huge resurgence, and not just in jewelry,” he says. “You will see gold detail on black shoes and handbags. It's all about going back to elegance and luxury and status.”

Gold portrays a very warm feeling that you don't get from other colors.

Most women's wardrobes already have a little black dress, says Marissa Rubin, senior market editor for People Style Watch. So, all a woman needs is to add some gold, and she is good to go.

“The color gold is very complimentary because it has a warm undertone and looks good on most women,” Rubin says. Silver is not as warm and flattering.

Gold metallic is something you can wear all year long, too, Rubin says. If you are going with a brocade dress in this combination, choose a black pump, she says. Add black tights to elongate your legs. That works much better than nude footwear, which is best to wear with a bare leg.

The shoe must-have for women in the black-and-gold color combination is the sky-high heel, says Gwendolyn Covington, a style editor for zappos.com. As for a clothing piece, Covington suggests investing in a black-and-gold dress to upgrade the trend.

“The colors black and gold look good together because it's a traditional pairing that is used in all style outfits from sporty to dressy,” Covington says. “Black and gold also looks good on most complexions and can still be considered part of the neutral color family. When next to gold, black allows for an amazing contrast, and gold looks even richer and more luxurious.”

If you want to try these hues, but don't want clothing or accessories, opt for nail polish or makeup, Rubin says. There are plenty of shimmer beauty products in black and gold such as eyes shadows and mascaras with gold gloss and glitter.

“Those are nice and fun ways to incorporate these colors, and it's not expensive,” Rubin says. “But it still gives you that holiday shine.”
