Former nurse specializing in retail therapy at Upper St. Clair boutique
After 17 years as an emergency room and intensive care unit nurse, Teres Lucot found another way to comfort people.
“Retail therapy is like nursing, because it's about taking care of the customer,” says Lucot, owner of Trunk Shows Boutique in Upper St. Clair. “It's therapeutic. Sometimes they might come in and say they are having a bad day — that is where the therapy part comes in — and we help them to feel better. I want customers who come to my store to feel like they are coming into my home. We want them to leave the store happy so they will want to come back. We are good listeners here.”
Yes, they are, says customer Carole Mantel of Upper St. Clair.
“You don't get this kind of service anywhere else,” Mantel says. “This store also has a wonderful selection of merchandise, and Teres gives back to the community, which is so important. It is really a gem in Upper St. Clair.”
Lucot first opened in October 2006 on Donati Road on the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park border with an 800-square-foot space. She moved to the current spot on Washington Road in March 2012.
The 2,300 square feet are filled with chic clothing, sparking jewelry, fun footwear, trendy handbags and a selection of gift items. Lucot has added some baby things and a few offerings for men.
Lucot is knowledgeable about trends and is fashion forward, says assistant buyer Laurie McCaig, who is one of Lucot's best customers.
“I'm a believer in this store,” McCaig says.
Having such dedicated employees is the reason Trunk Shows Boutique has done so well, Lucot says.
“I am extremely fortunate to have all-stars for employees,” Lucot says. “They all have special talents and create a personal shopping experience for our customers. Our customers become our friends. We are here to help a woman interpret her style.”
She says her store accommodates three types of fashionistas — classic traditionalists, trendy hipsters and energetic free spirits.
“I am all of those,” Lucot says. “So we try to offer a variety of items to fit your fashion style. Fashion is fun, and we have fun here.”
Lucot and her staff strive to be no-pressure salespeople. They do, however, hope to create a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. They provide wish lists where a customer will tell them items she likes in the boutique, they will take photos of those pieces, and when her husband, boyfriend or significant other comes in, they steer them in the right direction.
“The men really like this because they see what she likes, and they don't have to go into a shopping mall, which most of them don't like doing anyway,” says McCaig. “And we wrap the gifts up and make it a fun and easy shopping experience for the guys.”
Lucot tries to offer pieces not found at other stores.
Liverpool jeans, inspired by the Beatles with lyrics written inside, are $79 to $89. Most jewelry prices range from $29 to $159, handbags $59 to $500 and clothing $59 to $220.
Designers include handbags by Brighton, Hobo and Spartina and clothing by Tribal, Adore, Lynn Ritchie and Frank Lyman. Some of the many jewelry companies include Isabelle, Swarovski, Patricia Locke, Simon Sebbag and Sorrelli, which will be featured in a trunk show from May 1 to 5. Part of the event will be a fundraiser for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape.
“Deliveries of new merchandise come in daily,” Lucot says. “So, you will always find something new when you walk through the door. We like to think of this as a lifestyle store, a place where you can find items that fit your individual style.”
