Police officer hurt in three-alarm McKees Rocks fire, 4 others injured when ambulance crashes on way to hospital
A police officer was injured Wednesday morning in a three-alarm fire in McKees Rocks, and the ambulance transporting her crashed on its way to the hospital, injuring four more people, authorities said.
An Allegheny County 911 supervisor said the fire was reported in the 100 block of Greydon Avenue about 9:30 a.m. No one was trapped, but the fire quickly escalated to three alarms.
Allegheny County Chief Fire Marshal Matt Brown said a responding police officer attempted several times to get inside the building, a residential duplex, to confirm that no one was inside. McKees Rocks police Chief Rick Deliman said the officer, a 12-year veteran of the force, suffered from smoke inhalation and was going to be taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
On the way to the hospital, the Northwest EMS ambulance transporting her crashed into a tow truck heading the opposite direction in the 1700 block of Middletown Road in Kennedy, said Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs. Allegheny County 911 said another ambulance picked up the officer and continued to the hospital. Downs said additional medics transported three crew members from the ambulance and the driver of the tow truck to hospitals as well.
Deliman said his officer suffered minor injuries in the crash. The other victims' conditions were not available.
"She had bumps and bruises, but she'll be fine," Deliman said. "She got banged around in the back of the ambulance in the crash."
He estimated that the officer would be off-duty for a few days. Kennedy police were investigating the crash.
Downs said the section of Middletown Road where the crash occurred is county-maintained and had been "micro-milled" to improve traction. It gets extra attention when public works crews treat roads for snow and ice, she said.
The Greydon Avenue fire was under control shortly before 11 a.m. The Fire Marshal's Office was investigating.
