Mother-and-son musical duo will perform at Penn Area Library
The Penn Area Library will host mother-and-son music duo Johnny & Rachel of Johnstown on July 9 as part of its "Libraries Rock!" Summer Reading Club for adults,
Johnny Bayush has performed and led musical groups in blues, classic rock, indie rock, Christian music, West African drumming and classical music throughout the East Coast. Bayush was part of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Honors Jazz Band in 2013 and the Johnstown Youth Symphony Orchestra throughout high school.
In 2014, Bayush and his mother, Rachel Allen, traveled to Guinea, West Africa, and studied West African Drum with Les Ballet African in Guinea.
Bayush has performed at Hard Rock Cafe, Johnstown Ethnic Fest, Flood City Music Fest, The Rhythm of Life Music Festival, and at St. Francis University's Summer Rhythm Renewal with Jim Donovan, formerly of Rusted Root.
Rachel Allen is a music therapist at Windber Hospice and an adjunct faculty member at St. Francis University. She works applying live music at the bedside as a tool for healing with voice and harp with patients in hospice units.
Allen has studied as an accepted fellow with esteemed composer Alice Parker at the Melodious Accord Institute, and music and sound healing with David Darling, Fabien Mamien, Ruth Cunningham, Libana, Silvia Nakkach, Russell Paul, and Jim Donovan.
She traveled to coastal Guinea, West Africa, in January of 2014, 2016, and 2018 for a musical immersion in the songs, rhythms, and dances at the roots of West African music. At St. Francis University, she teaches creative movement and West African dance. Allen has recorded two albums, released through independent music company CD Baby, available through CD Baby and iTunes.
The duo have been making music together since 2008.
The program is at 6:30 p.m. on July 9, and is free and open to the public. However, advance registration is required by calling 724-744-4414, ext. 101, or visiting the library at 2001 Municipal Court in Harrison City.
