Fayette County assistant public defender killed in house fire
A longtime assistant public defender in Fayette County was identified Sunday as the victim of a fatal house fire in rural Wharton Township.
State police in Uniontown reported Mary Campbell Spegar, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at her home on Old Mill Road.
Police said the cause remains under investigation by the state police fire marshal but it is not believed to be suspicious. The fire was reported at 7:26 a.m.
Police said the home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. It was reported by a neighbor, authorities reported.
Public Defender Jeffrey Whiteko said Spegar worked in the office for more than 20 years.
“I can tell you that we're really going to miss her. It's such a tragedy and so sad ... she was such a nice person,” Whiteko said.
Whiteko said Spegar was dedicated to her clients.
“Mary was such a hard worker. And it didn't matter if it was a homicide case or a bike theft, she gave each case her all,” Whiteko said.
