4 elected to Greensburg Salem school board
Ronald Mellinger Jr., Rachel Shaw, Jeffrey Metrosky and Lynna Thomas defeated Jonathan O'Brien and Rich Guerrieri in the race for four seats on the Greensburg Salem School Board.
Mellinger, 54, and Shaw, 43, ran on both the Republican and Democratic ballots. Guerrieri, 69, and Thomas, 49, ran as Democrats, while Metrosky, 51, and O'Brien, 46, were on the GOP ticket.
Mellinger received 20.64 percent of the vote; Shaw, 20.10 percent; Metrosky, 15.78 percent; Thomas, 15.43 percent; O'Brien, 14.24 percent; Guerrieri, 13.71 percent
School board members serve four-year terms. The position is unpaid.
Mellinger is the current board president. He's been on the board since 2003, and said he wants to continue striking a balance between educational quality and fiscal responsibility.
Shaw, a business agent for the Service Employees International Union, said the district needs to better appeal to Harrisburg for increased funding.
Metrosky has been on the board almost four years, and said he wants to balance the budget and fight further tax increases.
Thomas, a counselor for Westmoreland County Community College, said she wants to use her background in education to promote communication between the board and the community.
School board members Rick Payha and Barbara Vernail will step down at the end of the year.
