Former Monongahela Valley Hospital employee accused of stealing thousands

A former Monongahela Valley Hospital employee is accused of writing checks totaling nearly $66,000 to himself while working as budget manager.
Joseph John Bozik, 55, of 1413 Athalia Ave., Monessen, was charged with felony counts of forgery and theft by unlawful taking, and a misdemeanor count of tampering with records or identification.
Charges filed by state police Trooper James Petrosky, of the Belle Vernon Barracks, grew from an investigation that began in February, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed with Magisterial District Judge Mark Wilson in Monongahela.
Bozik was employed as the budget manager at Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township.
He also served as the manager/accountant for Monongahela Medical Supply and Mon Vale Multiphasics Inc., both subsidiaries of the health care system.
MVH Senior Vice President/Treasurer Daniel Simmons discovered missing money from accounts on Feb. 8.
Simmons confronted Bozik, who allegedly admitted he had been writing checks to himself, according to the affidavit.
Police said Bozik had been writing unauthorized checks to himself, forging signatures and altering account records for more than 10 years.
Gleason and Associates Inc. conducted a forensic audit June 13. It found Bozik forged checks totalling $65,876. With the cost of the audit, the hospital lost a total of $75,190.89.
Bozik submitted his resignation letter to the hospital's human resources department on Feb. 9.
Hospital spokeswoman Mary Kaufman said the hospital doesn't comment on personnel issues.
Bozik was arraigned Wednesday by Wilson and sent to the Washington County Correctional Facility. He was released a few hours later after posting $10,000 straight bond.
He faces a preliminary hearing at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 16 before Wilson.
