The Aspinwall Neighborhood Watch will team up with the borough to buy new playground equipment at the park near Fifth Street and Field Avenue.

The neighborhood watch group raised about $5,000 through its National Night Out program earlier this year. The borough will match that amount.

Councilman Jim Donahoe said the borough will accept the money from the neighborhood watch so that the borough's insurance can cover the work.

Money for the park will be included in next year's budget.

“It would be better if we take the money; therefore, our insurance, our labor, our liability will take care of whatever goes on out there,” Donahoe said.

Lorraine Marks, president of the neighborhood watch, said the group was in the process of getting three bids for equipment. The group also has considered a sponsorship for the pavilion at the park. She said the building doesn't have gutters but otherwise appears fine.

“The building structurally seems to be really sound,” Marks said.

Officials would need to consider any sponsorship before it was approved. Marks said improving the pavilion would make it a more desirable space for families to rent out for parties and events.

Donahoe said basic work involving safety and liability at the park should be completed first. Marks said items such as soap dispensers could be among the first added.

“Those are things that should be there anyway,” Marks said.

The neighborhood watch will present a list to council to prioritize what should be done. Donahoe said among the equipment that needs to be replaced is a teeter totter.

With the money available, Donahoe said, the borough can do good work at the park.

“It's a decent amount of money, and I think we'll be able to do a lot with that,” Donahoe said.
