New Kensington police continued to work Thursday to identify a shooting victim who is refusing to cooperate and find the gunman who wounded him in public housing complex Wednesday night.Police Chief Tom Klawinski said the man, believed to 18 years old, is in a hospital under another name in order to deter anyone from trying to shoot him again.

“He is expected to be OK,” he said.

The man was a visitor at a Willow Court apartment owned by the Westmoreland County Housing Authority. The complex is located behind city hall and the police station.

Klawinski said the shot was fired from the court yard through an open window into an apartment. The victim was hit in his abdomen at about 10:15 p.m.

Klawinski said police were interviewing witnesses Thursday and getting phone calls from people with information, he said.

“We are still trying to confirm his identity,” Klawinski said. “We have a name and we're checking that.”

The city's investigation was aided by a Westmoreland County forensic detective who searched for evidence at the scene until early Thursday.

Klawinski wouldn't say if police have a suspect.

“We're talking with people,” he said.
