Lights will glisten on a cold winter night as children young and old gather by the fire awaiting Santa's return to Baldwin Borough on the back of an emergency response vehicle.

Santa Claus is coming to town not once, but twice this year.

The Baldwin Holiday Festival, sponsored by the Baldwin Kiwanis, will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Baldwin Borough Municipal Building, 3344 Churchview Ave.

The event will include the lighting of the Christmas tree located next to the log cabin, a visit from Santa, crafts for children and hot chocolate for all, Councilman Ed Moeller said at last week's borough council meeting.

Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or monetary donation for the Baldwin Food Pantry.

The jolly old man with a red suit and long white beard will return to Baldwin Borough on Dec. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m., courtesy of the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company, 5311 McAnnulty Road.

This is the first year the South Baldwin volunteer firefighters will host a visit from Santa.

“It's a multifaceted purpose,” company President Chad Hurka said.

Children are invited to sit on a fire truck and get their picture taken with Santa. Coloring books and plastic firefighter hats will be given to the youngsters, Hurka said. Calendars, featuring photos of South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company and its members, also will be for sale.

This is an attempt to increase interaction between the fire company and residents, Hurka said. It seemed like a “better alternative” than hosting an open house, which was poorly attended last year.

“We're trying everything,” Hurka said.

The fire company also will try to sell the remainder of its 500 2013 lottery calendars at the event.

The calendars, which serve as a fundraiser for the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company, are $25 each and tax deductible. Each calendar has two numbers inside that offer 200 chances to win double the money back.
