School board institutes fees for cyber, charter student activity participation

Charter and cyber-school students are welcome to participate in Penn Hills School District sports or extracurricular activities — but it's going to cost their schools.

The Penn Hills school board on Nov. 12 unanimously approved a new policy that sets a fee schedule for participation in activities and athletics, to the tune of:

• Activities, $100 per student;

• Marching band, $500 per student;

• Musicals, $500 per student;

• Interscholastic sports excluding football, $250 per student; and

• Football, $500 per student.

Cyber or charter students must be residents of the district to be eligible to participate, and the activity or sport must not already be offered at their current school.

There is not a similar fee in place for students who attend Penn Hills School District schools, according to district spokesperson Teresita Kolenchak.

Different districts handle the situation in different ways. In the Norwin School District, students who live within the district's borders but attend a cyber or charter school are permitted to participate in Norwin activities and athletics.

In the Hampton School District, officials created their own cyber-charter school to give students the option to participate in extracurriculars, school dances and athletics while still attending a cyber program.

In Penn Hills, district officials will also develop a procedure to ensure that charter and cyber students have access to information regarding the district's extracurricular activities and athletic programs through the main website, www.PHSD.k12.pa.us.
