Campus clippings: Plum graduate receives volleyball honor

Penn State Behrend junior setter Chelsea Magnusen (Plum) was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday for Oct. 1-7.

The 5-foot-7 Magnusen helped the Lions (12-7, 4-0) grab sole possession of first place in the Division III conference with a 3-1 win over Hilbert on Oct. 2 and was named to the Susquehanna Crusader Classic All-Tournament Team this past weekend.

Magnusen collected 32 assists and eight digs against Hilbert and produced 129 assists, 40 digs, 19 kills and eight blocks as Penn State Behrend finished 2-2 at the Susquehanna tournament. She leads the AMCC with an average of 8.31 assists per set.

Men's golf

• Penn State New Kensington junior Adam Stawski (Plum) shot a 6-over-par 78 to help the Lions claim third place through the first round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships at Penn State's Blue Course on Monday in State College. Stawski, the 2009 PSUAC runner-up, is a stroke behind the leader, Penn State Mont Alto's Chase King. The final round of the 36-hole tournament is set for Tuesday.

Sophomore Ben Hammel (Riverview) shot 85 for PSNK (348), which trails Penn State Mont Alto (313) and Penn College (339) in the team standings.

• The United States Collegiate Athletic Association is holding its national championships in conjunction with the PSUAC tournament. Stawski is ninth nationally, four strokes behind the leader of the 140-man field. The top 10 finishers earn USCAA All-America status. PSNK is 10th in the 23-team national field.

Football

• Grove City junior free safety Joe Diani (Leechburg) returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown in a 21-14 loss to Waynesburg on Saturday. Diani leads the Wolverines (3-3, 2-2) with four interceptions and is fourth with 31 tackles, including 19 solo stops.

Men's soccer

• Penn State New Kensington (6-4, 6-1) is in second place in the PSUAC after losing to Penn State Hazelton, 2-0, on Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Cook (Highlands) has three shutouts.

Women's soccer

• Robert Morris sophomore goalkeeper Becky Schoenecker (Fox Chapel) made five saves as the Colonials (1-12-2, 1-3-1) recorded their first win of the season by edging Central Connecticut State, 1-0, on Sunday in Northeast Conference play. Junior starting defender Alexa Sarsfield (Springdale) contributed to the shutout.
