NTSB issues report on plane crash that killed 3 Kiski Valley residents

The Burrell School District is getting set to release its new, six-year comprehensive plan on Oct. 23.

Assistant Superintendent Matt Conner has led a contingent of parents, along with educational and civic leaders, in developing the state-mandated plan, formerly known as the Strategic Plan.

The group created what they believe is a plan to focus on high standards and expectations regarding curriculum, instruction, supportive programs, parental involvement and shared resources.

“Some of the discussions were heated, but there was good give and take at the committee meetings,” Conner said.

Conner's power point presentation on Tuesday night outlined successes in the district's previous six-year plan, which included achieving federal Adequate Yearly Progress for eight straight years, development of online programs and implementing wireless capability in the district's four buildings.

The school board is scheduled to vote on the plan Nov. 20, and the plan must be submitted to the state Department of Education by Nov. 30.

In other business

• Superintendent Shannon Wagner said online summer school was a success.

Of 213 students from 22 school districts who participated in the program, 69 were Burrell students.

Wagner said 74 percent of students recovered credits not earned during the regular school year. She said student fees covered the cost of the program with no subsidy needed from taxpayers.

• The district received a $5,000 grant from United Way to enhance efforts by guidance departments to develop academic standards and career programs.

• Wagner asked the board to formalize a Princeton University method to have a single valedictorian determined by grade point average, as opposed to multiple valedictorians as Burrell has had in the past.

• Ronald Hereda of the Kinloch Fire Department promoted National Fire Safety Week at Tuesday's meeting.

Burrell fourth- and fifth-graders will participate in a poster development program, while sixth- and seventh-graders will have an essay competition.

Winning posters will be used in a firefighters calendar in 2014.

District officials will distribute poster and essay applications to teachers.
