Vandergrift man hospitalized after throat slashing

Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, 10:36 a.m.

A Vandergrift man who suffered knife wounds early Thursday was in fair condition, officials said.

Dane E. Hawley, 41, of 513-A Lowell St., was being treated in Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville, for a wound in the left side of his neck and possibly other wounds, police Chief Joe Caporali said.

The incident was reported at Hawley's residence at about 6:30 a.m.

Hawley's 10-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter were in the residence.

“The boy got his sister when they heard arguing. They came downstairs to see blood everywhere,” Caporali said.

According to a police report, when Vandergrift and other police arrived, Hawley and his girlfriend, Erin Baldwin, 40, of Vandergrift, were on the porch.

A bloody knife was on the floor between them, and police seized the knife, the report said.

According to the report, Hawley may have been wounded elsewhere because police officers found blood throughout the residence and on an interior stairwell.

The “holder” for the knife was found in a second-floor bedroom of the residence.

Caporali described the knife as an 8-inch doubled-edged dagger with skulls on the handle.

Baldwin was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison, for cuts on her hands. She hasn't been charged.

Police and Westmoreland County detectives are investigating.
