Police and firefighters closed River Road in Gilpin on Tuesday night due to a landslide in the area of The River's Edge canoe rental business.

The slide was reported just before 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 3200 block when, according to Armstrong County 911 transmissions, a car crashed into the falling debris.

Crews were closing River Road (Route 66) at Airport Road in Gilpin and at the intersection of Market and Main streets in Leechburg.

Initial reports were that the slide area was about the size of a football field and debris still was falling shortly after 11 p.m. PennDOT was notified.

There were reports of two patients involved in the car accident, including a driver with a head injury.

Gilpin police could not immediately be reached for comment late Tuesday.
