Police arrested an armed man who caused a school lockdown in O'Hara on Monday morning. They described the suspect as suicidal.

The man surrendered to police at about noon along Kittanning Pike near Collinwood Drive.

His identity wasn't immediately available. Police found a handgun nearby.

Police said the man had been pointing the weapon at himself. When they approached, he told them to stay away.

Kerr Elementary School in the Fox Chapel Area School District was locked down while police tried to apprehend the man about a quarter-mile from the elementary school.

School district spokeswoman Bonnie Berzonski said the district was alerted to the situation by Allegheny County emergency dispatch. The man was described only as white and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
