Heidelberg set for holiday event

Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, 8:51 p.m.

It's First Night for the third time in Heidelberg this weekend.

Ellsworth Avenue Playground will be the site of the borough's third annual First Night of Lights tree-lighting and holiday event from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

And the small community expects a good turnout.

“Last year, we had about 250 people there, rolling in and rolling out,” Heidelberg Manager Joe Kauer said.

The event features ice-carving presentations, hay rides to view the lights around the neighborhood, funnel cakes, kettle corn, and free hot chocolate and cookies.

Of course, Santa Claus is expected to visit, as well, around 6:45 p.m.

“We're also doing a toy drive for Toys for Tots, so we encourage residents to bring a new unwrapped toy,” Kauer said.

Craft shows

Hours before the Night of Lights celebrations, Three Hierarchs Eastern Orthodox School on Ellsworth Avenue is hosting its Christmas Shopping Extravaganza Vendor Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than 20 vendors will be on hand, and there also will be a bake sale featuring Greek desserts. Proceeds benefit the school.

On Dec. 8, the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department will hold a craft show at the borough VFD from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
