Carlynton hires new athletic director
Just in time for the new school year, the Carlynton board of directors hired a new athletic director at its Aug. 23 meeting. And in this case, new is familiar.
Acting athletic director Nate Milsom, who was the assistant for the past two years under former athletic director David Oddi, is officially assuming the role, an easy choice for the board out of the four candidates to interview for the position.
“The guy has a very rich history, a deep resume in terms of sports,” board President David Roussos said. “He has a great rapport with the kids. He understands things beyond the district and had great interaction with other districts. It just seems like the natural thing to do.”
Along with filling in as a substitute at Carlynton, Milsom has been the head track and field coach at the school the past five years. From 2005 to 2009, he was an assistant coach on the football team and currently is an assistant on Montour's staff.
Milsom, 29, has an undergraduate degree in business education from Robert Morris and completed in May a master's in sports management from California (Pa.).
He also brings professional experience, serving as an operations supervisor with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the summers of 2010 and 2011. Recently, he's been the game day operations coordinator for the Pittsburgh Power Arena Football League team.
“With the Power, same as athletic director, you have to put together a staff to get your events to run,” Milsom said. “In Tampa, I dealt a lot with travel and scheduling. Those all relate to athletics here.”
Even before dropping the “acting” from his title, Milsom was active in the department during the build-up to fall sports.
That included requiring all fall sports coaches to complete an online concussion course, regarding recognizing signs and symptoms and treatment, before they could coach this season.
“With concussions,” he said, “you always have to err on the side of caution.”
Looking toward significant renovation projects next summer, the board will hold a public meeting to discuss facilities following its regular meeting Sept. 6, which will be moved to 7 p.m.
“This is about saying, ‘OK, we've made the decision to invest in our existing buildings. Now, let's do it,'” Roussos said.
Superintendent Gary Peiffer said renovations at Carnegie and Crafton elementary schools, including electrical, plumbing and HVAC work, would cost $13.2 million, according to an estimate by Tower Engineering.
The board accepted a bid for a new cooling tower at the high school, to be installed by Lugaila Mechanical, in the amount of $209,900.
The tower will be constructed from a composite material instead of metal.
