Carnegie mini-golf links closing after 70 years
All good things must come to an end, and after seven decades, Carnegie's Forsythe Miniature Golf and Snacks will not open for the summer season.
Sue Stasiuk, the niece of current owner Wanda Forsythe Clay, said the family is so spread out and caught up in everyday life that no one is able to operate the business right now.
“Everybody is going in different directions right now,” she said. “It's just not something anyone in our family can do right now.”
She said the decision to not reopen, while difficult, is one of peace.
“This has been coming for awhile,” she said. “It just seems like the right thing to do now.”
The course, which also includes a candy shop, has been family-operated since its opening, and Stasiuk said many generations have passed through the course – not just from her family, but from local area families as well.
“Many people from the area have been there, and their children and grandchildren have come over time, too,” she said.
Carnegie Mayor Jack Kobistek, who has lived in Carnegie for more than 20 years and raised his family there, said the closing will be a loss for the entire area.
“My kids are going to be disappointed – my whole family is,” he said. “We've golfed at that little golf course since my kids were little, and they're teenagers now. Now they go golf with their friends. It will be sorely missed by our community.”
The concept for the course was born in 1939, as Stasiuk's great-great-uncle, George Lang, sought solace from the death of his wife. In need of a distraction, he approached his great-nephew, Joe Forsythe – Stasiuk's grandfather – about building the course.
The course opened in 1942, and the penny candy store followed soon after. The business has passed through the hands of numerous members since, though the care of the course has always been a whole family affair.
“Four of us over time took over after my grandmother and grandfather handed it over to us,” she said. “It's a very homespun business and always has been.”
